The ear is also a functional and aesthetic unit of our body same as our nose and other organs. Many different deformities, either congenital or posterior, can be seen in them. The ear problem we often encounter is the prominent ear. In this aesthetic problem, the non-aesthetic appearance is the wide angle that the ear makes with the skull, and it may come with the absence or flattening of the in-ear cartilage structures and folds.
The best time to do the prominent ear correction surgery is before pre-school age. It is recommended in terms of psychological aspects and not to be affected from mocking of his/her friends. of course, this is not a rule, it can be corrected at any age.
Prominent ear surgery is also common in adults. Prominent ear surgery is done with local anesthesia in adults in the hospital environment and general anesthesia in children and lasts about an hour. The operation is performed from behind the ear and permanent stitches are made from the inside for the folds of the ear cartilages. The ear lobe is brought to the correct angle and closed with hidden stitches that do not require the incision site.
You do not need to stay in the hospital after the surgery. The ear remains bandaged for 2 days. Post-operative edema dissolves within about ten days. It takes a few months to get the ear its final shape. Following the attempts made on the appearance of the ear, a significant improvement is observed not only in the deformity of the ear, but also psychological state of the person.
Recently, prominent ear correction without incision and stitches can be made for suitable candidates under the local anesthesia. Although it is not a method that I prefer and recommend, the advantages and disadvantages of it are discussed in detail with the patient and can only be done in patients who have flattening cartilage folds in the upper one-third of their ear. Not every ear is suitable for this operation.
